Storm Sisters: The Sinking World by Mintie Das ~Goodreads~
Published by Rovio Books 2016
Paperback edition 398 pages
Charlie, Sadie, Liu, Raquel, and Ingela are five young girls traveling the Seven Seas in search of their missing families, who disappeared on the infamous Day of Destruction. The girls are in great danger from sinister foes, and have created a false identity as a fierce group of pirates. As a vengeful father threatens Liu, the girls must head into uncharted waters. But how long will their disguise keep them from harm? And is it such a good idea to join forces with a group of rebellious boys from their past?
I don’t think I’ve read a pirate book since I was a kid, and you know what none of them seemed to have? Female leads, and for me the girls; Charlie, Sadie, Liu, Raquel and Ingela were a great group of varying personalities some of which I could picture my friends being similar to.
The main plot is the girls on a quest to find their lost families who disappeared on the Day of Destruction, but its a dangerous world out there for young girls and they soon decide that they need to cover their identities and become fearless pirates. They come face to face with all kinds of unsavoury characters along the way, and may have to team up with a group of boys they used to know to help them out.
What I loved about this book was how it centered around team work and girl power, sticking together and remaining loyal. There’s good humour, a few heart dropping moments where you think the girls are close to falling apart, and rather touching moments that reminded me of the adventures me and my own friends have gone on together.
I think the only minor issue I had was where the book is set in the 1700’s and the language was very 21st century, but that’s me nit picking!
I’m excited for what happens next with all the girls, and wish the lovely Mintie Daas all the success she deserves.
