Thank you Faye for inviting me on this brilliant tour of Pilot Jane and the Runaway Plane and to also the publisher Big Sunshine Books!
Join Pilot Jane, a fun and fearless airline captain, as she travels the world with her best friend Rose, a high-speed passenger jet. Together Jane and Rose have exciting adventures and form a perfect team, delivering their passengers safely to destinations as far afield as Alaska and Australia. But when disaster strikes and Rose falls ill, Jane is paired with ‘lean, mean flying machine’ Mighty Mitch. Can she still get the Queen to her party on time? Featuring a clever and courageous heroine, this action-packed rhyming story celebrates ‘Girl Power’ and shows what you can achieve if you work together. Fasten your seatbelt and get ready for take-off!
My immediate after thought for this book was that I wish I had this book when I was a little girl, because this is the ultimate girl power book. However, I’d like to stress importantly that it doesn’t undermine boys at all it is a book where girls and boys come together and discover that they make a great team. I felt that this message was extremely relevant and important for young children to learn about equality, working together and treating each other with the same respect and kindness we deserve as individuals and Caroline Baxter conveyed this perfectly.
We meet Pilot Jane and Rose her plane who travel across the world to various destinations, but one day that happens to be a special day when the Queen is set to travel onboard Rose, Rose is sick and she can’t fly the Queen to her party. This is where the ‘boy’ plane Mighty Mitch comes in and saves the day, although he is reluctant to help Jane out at first.
This really was a lovely book to read, full of fun rhymes throughout and great illustrations. I’m passing it onto my boyfriend so he can read it to his class at school. I’m keeping my eye out for more Caroline Baxter books!
